Do you know about the 40-50% off coupons you can get in the mail? When you go to Joann, ask to sign up for their mailing list. Then, when the flyer comes, see if there are 40-50% off coupons. These will not apply if the item is already discounted... Maybe try your dress in calico...but as you are YOUNG don't forget to be BOLD sometimes in picking fabrics. Avoid fabrics where you have to match seams (at first - till you have more sewing confidence.) So avoid large plaids, for instance. But JoAnn seems to keep up with younger fashion trends & colors and if you look through the whole store, you should find the fabrics that have the look you want.

PS Simplicity patterns were five for $5 this past weekend. Am not sure when the sale ends.

Calico or about any fun fabric would work...Hope you post pictures of your work. Some of the people here (like IrishDancerThreadworks who posted below) have a high skill level...and many of us with medium to low skill levels would be glad to encourage you!

Just saw your chatter on my profile page. I can not see a picture of what you are working on, but glad that you are a young person sewing! Keep it up, and don't get frustrated. Your ripper can be your very best friend. If at first you don't succeed, try again!

Saw your cry for help...My daughter has made similar cries for help - :)... First, head towards JoAnn's (since I'm guessing you want to sew this dress). Spring & summer fabrics are OUT on display!!! Then...look at the pattern books and the patterns out on the racks...Pick a fun simple dress pattern that you like. If you don't like what you see in the summer section, check out the "easy to sew" pattern section also. And even peek in the formal gown section...Avoid fancy stuff, but look for the very easy pattern that does not have to be lined. My daughter found an INCREDIBLY easy pattern which she made for h.s. graduation...She used satin...but the pattern could easily be made from a poly-cotton fabric for summer. I don't even think it had a zipper. The pattern books always have a youth section...and sometimes a show like Project Runway has some younger patterns... And then take your pattern to the fabrics...and pick some fun cotton (or polyester cotton blend since it wrinkles less). Avoid plaids... If you are new to sewing, maybe your first dress might be cut shorter (if you don't like how it came out) and be a casual top...or even a nightgown depending on the style. (There noone will care if the seams, etc aren't what you want. Avoid fancy tailoring...and you probably will be happy with your look. And the chances of someone else having the identical look are INCREDIBLY small!!!
